President returns home
President Abdul Hamid returned home yesterday morning from London after medical checkup.
A regular flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the president landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11.10am, presidents Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS. Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Foreign Minister AH Mahmud Ali, dean of the diplomatic corps in Bangladesh, British High Commissioner Ms Alison Blake, Cabinet Secretary and high civil and military officials received the president at the airport. The president went to London on February 28.
Biker killed in road mishap
A man was killed and another injured when their motorbike collided head-on with a truck at in front of Rajshahi Airport on Rajshahi-Naogaon Highway under Shahmukhdum Police Station today, police and hospital sources said.
The deceased was identified as Polash Ahmed, 22, son of Tegharia village under Durgapur Upazila of the district. Injured Nipu Hossain, 25, was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Quoting locals police said a sand-laden truck knocked them down while they were returning to their resident riding on motorbike around 1.30 pm. The driver managed to escape with his truck.
Two arrested with firearms
Police in a drive arrested two alleged robbers yesterday who were gathered for committing robbery from Probortak area.
During the drive some other robbers were managed to flee, said police sources. The two arrestees were identified as Md Hanif, 19, son of Mohammad Hasan, hailing from Comilla and Md Fayez, 20, Abdul Karim, hailing from Lohagara upazila of Chittagong. Police seized a country made Light Gun (LG) and two rounds of bullets.
Two Shibir leaders held
Detective Branch Police (DB) arrested two Shibir leaders, including the MC College unit Shibir president, from a house of the citys Upashahar area early yesterday.
The arrestees was identified as Rasel Ahmed, president of Shibir at MC College unit and Ashik Ullah another activist of Shibir. A team of DB police arrested them from a house of Upashahar area, said Towhidul Islam , ADC of DB police.
UGC accords reception
University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday accorded a reception to seventy one authors of books published by UGC at its auditorium in the capital.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid joined the reception ceremony as the chief guest with UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan in the chair. Former Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Mohammad Farashuddin, Chief Information Commissioner Professor Golam Rahman, Planning Commission Member Abdul Mannan and former UGC Chairman Professor Nazrul Islam were present on the occasion, among others.
Drug peddler held with yaba
Chittagong district police in a drive arrested an alleged yaba trader with 200 tablets from Fakirpara area under Satkania Upazila of the district on Wednesday night.
The arrestee was identified as Jamir Uddin, 36, son of late Mafizur Rahman, hailed from Fakirpara Saudahat area of the upazila. A team of Satkania police on secret information arrested Jamir with yaba tablets, said Mohammad Farid Uddin Khandakar, officer-in-charge of Satkania police station.
