Stress on preparedness to cut disaster risks

Divisional Commissioner of Khulna Md Abdus Samad yesterday stressed the need for public awareness and modernised training to protect life, livelihood and resources of millions of vulnerable people across the country.
It will not only save vulnerable people exposed to natural disasters in various forms but also pave the way for sustainable development of the country.
Commissioner Samad said that the south-western coastal belt of Bangladesh is one of the most disaster prone zones in the world where storm, cyclone, tidal surge, drought, river erosion and water-logging are now common. Due to climate change the frequency and intensity of disasters are increasing, threaten lives and livelihoods.
Referring that Sidr on November 15, 2007 and Aila on May 25, 2009 battered Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Barguna, Patuakhali, Jhalakati, Pirojpur, Noakhali, Bhola, Chittagong, Coxbazaar districts.
Abdus Samad also elaborated the adverse impacts of climate changes on the habitations, livelihoods, environment, irrigation, navigation, ecology, biodiversity, weather and under ground water levels. He also stressed on educational institution based activities to promote a culture of safety in the society about disaster management. Promoting food and water security as an important factor in ensuring the resilience of communities to post-disaster hazards, he observed.
Divisional Comissioner of Khulna Md Abdus Samad expressed these opinions while speaking as chief guest at a discussion on ‘National Disaster Preparedness Day-2016’ held at the conference room of DC office in the city. Khulna District Administration adopted massive programmes to celebrate the day including rally, discussion meeting and procession. Additional Superintendent of Police, Khulna Md Abdul Halim, Additional Deputy Commissioner (education and ICT), Khulna Md Moniruzzaman, District Disaster and Rehabilitation Officer of Khulna Md Abdul Mannan were present as special guests. Additional Deputy Commissioner (LA), Khulna Md Sultan Alam presided over the function. Additional Deputy Commissioner (general), Khulna Md Jahangir Hossain delivered the address of welcome. Earlier, to mark the day, Khulna district administration brought out a colourful procession from Shaheed Hadis Park which paraded the main city streets and concluded it in front of DC office. A good number of government and non-government officers, political leaders, NGO personalities, civil society members, city elites, local journalists and a large number of city dwellers attended the procession  carrying festoons and banners inscribed with different slogans regarding disaster preparedness.
The other discusants strongly believed that the active participation of children and youths will make the nation stronger for combating disaster risk in all aspect of lives. They urged the civil society, non-government agencies and the private sector to join hands in government’s efforts for increasing national disaster resilience.
