Dallas suspect snapped, says father
BBC: A man suspected of attacking the Dallas police headquarters with guns and explosives had "snapped" under personal pressures, his father has said.
The suspect identified himself to the authorities as James Boulware, although his identity is yet to be officially confirmed. He was shot dead in his van by police snipers after a standoff. His father, also named James, said his son had been angered by losing custody of his son.
N Korea test-fires three missiles
AFP, SEOUL: North Korea on Sunday test-fired three short-range missiles into the sea, South Korea's defence ministry said, weeks after claiming a successful submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) test.
The North fired three KN-01 missiles from a site near its eastern city of Wonsan, a ministry spokesman told AFP. "The missiles appear to have a range of nearly 100 kilometres," he said, adding the test lasted 26 minutes and began around 4.30 pm (0730 GMT).
Egypt jails 23 for Shiite killings
AFP, CAIRO: An Egyptian court has sentenced 23 people to 14 years in prison for the killings by an angry mob of four Shiite men outside Cairo two years ago.
The four dead were among Shiites attacked in June 2013 by a mob of several hundred residents as they gathered at a house in the town of Abu Musallam. The court handed down the sentences on Saturday, acquitting eight other defendants, a court official said.
US solo rower rescued in Pacific
AFP, TOKYO: A female adventurer was rescued off the Japanese Pacific coast a week into her solo attempt to row across the Pacific, the Japan Coast Guard said yesterday.
American Sonya Baumstein, 30, had left Japan's Choshi port, east of Tokyo, on June 7 in an attempt to row across the Pacific non-stop to San Francisco. But at around 2:20 pm (0520 GMT) Saturday she sent a distress signal to a freighter travelling nearby because of expected bad weather.
