In an audacious robbery, a gang of armed robbers looted cash and valuables from the depot office of Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Incepta Hygiene and Hospital Ltd in C&B Road area of Barisal early Sunday.
Cash of over Tk 1 crore and a van loaded with valuable medicines were looted. The well-trained dacoits ransacked 24 lockers, containing money, in 12 rooms of the three-storey office building, damaged CCTV camera points, and looted computer peripherals and devices in the office. Abdur Rahman and Md. Sohrab Hosen, both security guards of the office, said the gang had entered the office from the nearest building around 1:30am on Sunday and left the office around 3:45am after carrying out the dacoity.
The gang first attacked all eight security guards and delivery assistants—held them at gunpoint, tied them up with ropes and beat them up mercilessly. Four of them—Md. Mamun, Aslam Ali, Md. Moharaz and Nayan Mia—suffered injuries inflicted by choppers. They were admitted to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
After the three-hour-long dacoity, the goons left the office from the mail gate of the office, after hijacking a covered van (no. Dhaka metro Mo 11/09101) loaded with valuable medicines. Imran Rashid, in-charge of the computer section, said the dacoit group had damaged more than 14 computers and looted hard disks, apart from ransacking the lockers and vaults of the office. Md. Zahidul Islam, in-charge of the pharma company’s Barisal depot office, said 40 delivery assistants had deposited cash amounting to over Tk. 1 crore in the office lockers. They had collected the cash from the markets from Thursday noon to Saturday night. The dacoits damaged the digital network of the office.
Incepta’s senior manager Shafiul Alam Shahin and assistant manager Jabed Hosen arrived in Barisal and visited the spot. Md. Ansar Uddin, senior assistant commissioner of the Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP), said high-ranking officials of the BMP swung into action.
The covered van loaded with medicines was recovered from Batazor Bazar area on the Barisal-Dhaka highway around 7:45am. Barisal Kotwali police received the van from the highway police of Gournadi. Md. Ansar Uddin said information related to the dacoity was sent to all the nearest district and upazila police stations, who were requested to set up police posts on the roads to arrest the absconding culprits.
No case has been filed and no one was arrested in this connection till the time of filing the report.
