Fishermen’s identity cards (ID) were distributed among 1,015 fishermen in the district here today to bring them under different subsidized programmes of the government, reports BSS.
Whip of Jatiyo Sangshad Shahiduzzaman Sarker inaugurated the distribution activities by giving the cards to the fishermen at a function on Patnitala Upazila Parishad auditorium this noon as the chief guest.
Fisheries department distributed the ID cards among the fishermen under Fishermen Registration and ID Card Distribution project while the government of Bangladesh provided the fund, official sources said.
Speaking on the occasion, Shahiduzzaman said due to lack of their proper identities the fishermen could not avail of the government assistance during the lean period.
Bangladesh presently stands fourth in producing sweet water fish with the initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he added. The whip also said fishermen community in the country has been given identity cards so that they get proper assistance from the government and can play a vital role in this regard.
Chaired by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Malek, it was addressed, among others, by Zila fisheries officer Abdul Hannan, assistant director of Zila fisheries department Kamruzzaman, upazila fisheries officer Polash Chandra Debnath and president of upazila Awami League Alhajj Isahak Hossain.
