Officials asked to work sincerely to protect distressed people

RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a workshop asked the officials and others concerned to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty for protecting the interests of poor and distressed people rightly, reports BSS. They also urged them to reduce system loss in project implementation that needs careful measures. There is no alternative to come out from the existing weakness relating to project and beneficiary scrutiny to protect the interests of the underprivileged section of the society.
They were addressing the inaugural session of a daylong training workshop styled "Competence, Administrative Monitoring and Evaluation in Social Safety Net Programmes" held at Nanking Darbar Hall in the city yesterday. Divisional Commissioners' Office organised the workshop in association with Safety Net Special Programmes Project where all the additional deputy commissioners, district relief and rehabilitation officers, upazila nirbahi officers and project implementation officers from eight districts under the division attended. The speakers said educational institution, community clinic and disabled and distressed women should be given priority in project selection.
Corruption, system loss and overlapping could be reduced substantially through the best uses of ICT. There is a need of remaining alert so that no more poor people are affected and deprived from service. Social safety net programme is playing significant role in alleviating poverty, they laid emphasis on bringing more accountability and transparency to get highest benefit from the safety net interventions. The safety net programmes can play major role in eradicating poverty by ensuring its proper planning, effective implementing policy, proper coordination and transparency and accountability, they added. The speakers observed that most of the existing loopholes of social safety net programmes could be solved through collective efforts. Commissioner of Rajshahi division Helaluddin Ahmed and Project Director Zabed Ahmed addressed the session as chief and special guests respectively with Munir Hossain, Additional Commissioner (General) in the chair. Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, Training Expert Nurul Islam and Project Expert Dr Syeda Khaleda also spoke.
