Flood worsens in 4 dists

Thousands of people in the northern and eastern districts of the country have been affected by incessant rain and onrush of water from the upstream.
At least one lakh people, who live in low-lying areas of about 40 unions in Sadar, Ulipur, Roumari, Chilmari and Char Rajibpur upazilas under Kurigram district, have been affected by the flood.
Water Development Board (WDB) sources said the water level of the Brahmaputra rose by 2cm, while that of the Dudhkumar rose by 5cm, in the last 24 hours.
The sufferings of flood-affected people have further worsened, due to shortage of dry food. Crops and vegetables in the area are submerged.
Deputy commissioner of Kurigram, ABM Azad, told The Independent that water levels in rivers of the district have not crossed the danger level, but between 5,000 and 7,000 people have been affected by the flooding.

He, however, said that the administration is ready, and has already distributed 50 to 60 tonnes of relief material, to five or six upazilas in the district.
The onrush of water and incessant rain has inundated areas in several unions of Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas under Nilphamari district, affecting at least 10,000 people in 25 villages, as well as in char land on the Teesta.
Executive engineer of WDB at Dalia division, Mostafizur Rahman, said, “The flood situation worsened due to the rise of water in the Teesta. Forty-four sluice gates of the barrage have been kept open.” As a result, the water level was flowing 5 cm above danger level.
He, however, said the flood situation has not gone out of control.
On the other hand, our Sylhet correspondent reports that at least four unions in the Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet have been inundated by flood water, affecting 2.87 lakh people and damaging about 500 houses in the areas.
Road communication has also been affected in the upazila, for the last three days. About 60 kms of unpaved road, 20 kms of highway, and 60 kms of concrete road, have been affected.
About 2,000 hectares of crop land in the area are now under flood water, according to upazila agricultural officer Anisuzzaman.
District authorities have allocated 19 tonnes of rice for the flood-affected people. Over 10,000 hectares of vegetable fields remain submerged, agriculture officials said.
Our Bogra correspondent reports that over 10,000 people have been affected by floods in two upazilas of the district.
Educational activities have also been hampered in the affected areas. Thousands of flood-hit people have taken shelter in local schools, colleges and madrasas. Thousands of students have lost their books, school uniforms, and other essential educational items.
The situation will surely affect the examinees of the half-yearly examination, guardians said.
As the government relief did not reach most of the affected areas, people have been suffering from food, drinking water, and cattle fodder shortage.
People are suffering from diarrhoea and skin diseases, due to lack of drinking water, locals in Bogra alleged.
At least 100m of the flood control dam was damaged due to increase in the water level of the Jamuna river in Hawrakhali Dolipara area, under Sariakandi upazila of the district, yesterday morning.
Deputy divisional engineer of the WDB (Sariakandi branch), Abdul Motaleb, said the Bangladesh Navy has been constructing an 8-km-long dam, from Borikandi of Kutubpur union to Godakhali of Kamalpur union, at a cost of Tk. 20 crore, and 70 per cent of the work had already been completed. Kamalpur union and the adjacent lower areas of Dhunat upazila will be submerged because of the damage to the dam.
WDB sources said water of the Jamuna was flowing 11cm over the danger mark, around midnight yesterday.
Our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports that several thousand villagers of four upazilas of the district have been affected by the onrush of water from upstream, in the last 24 hours.
The affected areas are Sardarpara, Munshipara, Kajipara, Tatipara, Mohimpara of Patgram upazila, Parulia, Goddimari, Singdurna of Hatibandha upazila, Gobardhon of Aditmari upzila, and Bongram, Siberkuti and Kalughat of Sadar upazila.
The chairman of Kulaghat union said nearly 1,000 people have been affected in his area. No relief material has been distributed among them so far.
However, the flood information centre said the water levels of the major river systems are showing a rising trend. The flood situation in some areas of Bogra, Jamalpur, Sylhet and Gaibandha districts may further deteriorate, while the situation at Sunamganj may improve in the next 24 hours.
