The anti-Liberation War element Razakar Bahini was formed with 96 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami in Khulna in 1971. Jamaat certified its members as true Pakistani, dependable and active workers, reports BSS.
One such certificate was: “This is to certify that Mr Haroon-ur-Rashid Khan, S/o Abdul Azim Khan, 36, Purana Paltan Lane, Dacca-2 is our active worker. He is true Pakistani and dependable. He is trained Razakar. He has been issued a rifle No-776---with ten round ammunition for self-protection.”
It was signed by ‘In charge of Razakar and Muzahid, Jamaat-e-Islam, 91/92, Siddique Bazar, Dacca.’
Abu Sayeed in his book titled “Sadharon Ghoshanar Prekkhit ebong Ghulam Azam” displayed the identity of a Razakar. Jamaat leader AKM Yusud formed the Razakar Bahini in Khulna with 96 Jamaat activists, according to a book titled “Ekattorer Ghatok Dalalra Ke Kothai.”
The East Pakistan Razakar Ordinance was promulgated on 1 June 1971 by the Governor of East Pakistan, Lt Gen Tikka Khan.
“The ‘Rasikars’ are a destabilizing element - living off the land, able to make life and death decisions by denouncing collaborators and openly pillaging and terrorizing villagers without apparent restraint from the Army”, said a declassified US document.
