The Election Commission (EC) in consultation, with the Khulna District Special Branch (DSB) of police has identified 427 polling centres out of 595 under 9 upazilas of 64 unions of the district as ‘risky’. The Union Parishad (UP) election scheduled to be held on March 22, 2016. The total number of voters in the Khulna district is 11 lakh 23 thousand 9 hundred and 84 including 5 lakh 68 thousand 8 hundred and 62 males and 5 lakh 55 thousand 1 hundred and 22 females, according to Election Commission, Khulna district. The voters will exercise their right to franchise to elect one UP Chairman for each union and one member (general) for each ward and one reserve member (female) for every 3 wards. Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Md Nazmul Ahsan said, “We prepared the ward-wise lists of vulnerable centres considering previous records of violence and location of centres.” “We are fully aware of the needs of the Returning Officer for holding free and fair election, he said. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Khulna Range SM Moniruzzaman said that police has taken necessary steps for clashes free Union Parisad (UP) election. The terrorists who could cause interruption in UP election; police has taken steps to arrest them.
Besides, the law enforcement agencies, including elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-6), Armed Police Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and district police have taken special measures to control the law and order situation in the city and district in connection with the union parishad election. He also told police will start drives shortly against terrorist and illegal arms holders. Officer-in-Charge of Koyra thana Harendranath Biswas said, “The law enforcers will be alert when the voters casting votes in this vulnerable centres. He urged to the Police Super for allotting one mobile car for every union. Superintendent of Police, Khulna district Md Habibur Rahman said that they have started special drives to arrest criminals, he said, adding that the crackdown will be continue until election results are announced. The law enforcing agencies are of the view that many listed criminals, who went into hiding earlier, are likely to come out from hideouts just before the union parishad election. Necessary steps have already been taken to hold a free and peaceful election in all the polling centres of his district, Habib said.
