Deed writers agitate against Bochaganj sub-registrar

OUR CORRESPONDENT

Striking deed writers in Bochaganj upazila of Dinajpur district staged a demonstration on Wednesday demanding removal of the upazila sub-registrar Md. Golam Mortuza for his alleged corruption and harassment in land registration.
Sale of land in the upazila has remained suspended since February 2 when the deed writers started an indefinite strike in protest against the sub-registrar.
“We have been passing our days without any income in last one month,” said Swadhin Chandra Roy, a deed writer of Bochaganj Sub registry office.
The agitating deed writers also besieged the sub registry office on Wednesday to realise their demand.  Mizanur Rahman, President of Bochaganj Upazila Deed Writers Samity and vice president of Bochaganj upazila AL, said Md. Golam Mortuza has not processed any land selling papers without payment of kickback ever since he joined the upazila registry office on August 3 last year.
If anybody declines to pay the bribe he is subjected harassment, he said adding whenever a deed-writer protested to his misdeed the sub-registrar used to threaten him of cancelling his licence, he said. “We have complained to relevant departments to get a respite from his harassment, but failed”, he said.   The sufferers, including those who want to sell their land, also joined in the agitation on Wednesday as the sub registrar Md. Golam Mortuza.
“The sub-registrar had demanded Tk10,000 as bribe from me when I went there to register sale deed,” said Abdul Hye of Murshidhat village in the upazila, who needed the sale proceed for the purpose of his daughter’s marriage.
Hari Chandra Roy, Secretary of Bochaganj upazila Deed Writers Samity, said all the members of his organisation have been passing through a hard time with their families without any income over the past one month.
He demanded removal of the official and that the government should carryout inquiry against him. “Our demand is not illogical’, he added.
Golam Mortuza, the sub-registrar, said allegation against him is false. He said he has already informed his high officials regarding the unjust move of the deed writers.
But the deed writers have warned that they will not join their work unless the sub registrar is withdrawn.
