Calcutta Darbar, an exclusive restaurant aiming to serve most authentic subcontinental food, was launched this Tuesday in the capital’s Panthapath area.
Eminent Indian film and stage actor-poet Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Dhaka University Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman were present at the opening ceremony of the restaurant. Conducted by poet Nasir Ahmed, Professor Merina Jahan, Engineer Mizanul Karim, Eiko Hussain and Masud Karim delivered speeches at the programme.
Proprietor of the restaurant Masud Karim, also a cultural activist, informed that Calcutta Darbar aims to feature various cuisines from the subcontinent and the restaurant has been opened to show the minor differences in taste between Indian and Bengali cuisine.
Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman said, “We usually think that Indian food means North Indian food. Foods from the southern parts are considered to be Bengali cuisine.”
Soumitra Chattopadhyay said, “If there was no Bangla language, I would not be today’s Soumitra Chattopadhyay. There are always differences in food habits. From my point of view, Bengali food is quite balanced. Maintaining its standard up to the mark, Calcutta Darbar will start its journey—this is my expectation.”
