Dhaka Theatre, one of the popular theatre troupes in the country, will stage its much-anticipated play ‘Binodini’ today at the Mohila Samity, as a part of the month-long theatre festival titled ‘Bhanga-Gora Natya Utsab’.
Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, in association with Ministry of Cultural Affairs, has organised the festival with the slogan ‘Manche Natok Dekhun, Oitihasik Mohila Samity Manche Asun’ at the Dr Nilima Ibrahim auditorium – popularly known as Mahila Samity Mancha in the city’s Baily Road area.
Dhaka Theatre’s widely popular monodrama ‘Binodini’ is a biographical play based on the life of legendary Bengali theatre actress Binodini Dasi. Saymon Zakaria, under the guidance of Selim Al Deen, dramatised the production. During the dramatisation, Zakaria used two autobiographies of Binodini Dasi – ‘Aamar Kotha’ and ‘Amar Abhinoy Jibon’.
The play, directed by Nasiruddin Yousuf, depicts Binodini’s rise from an entertainer who society looked down upon to a venerated artiste. Shimul Yousuf plays the role of Binodini Dasi, who made a remarkable contribution to urban Bengali theatre in its formative years.
To note, beginning on February 28, the festival will conclude on March 31. Tickets will available in front of the hall from 4pm.
However, Mahila Samity Mancha was opened in 1973 with a show of Nagarik Natya Sampraday’s play ‘Baki Itihas’. In order to build a new building with modern facilities and an audience-friendly seating arrangement, the auditorium has been dismantled in 2011.
