Controlling rice diseases

BARI scientist invents novel bacteria

BAU CORRESPONDENT, Mymensingh

A scientist of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Dr Mohammad Tofajjal Hossain, has discovered a new species of novel endophytic bacteria, Bacillus oryzicola that helps in increasing rice yields by controlling major diseases and promoting the plant growth.
Hossain, a senior scientific officer of BARI, achieved the success after a research for five years at the Gyeongsang National University in South Korea.
Contacted, Hossain said the newly innovated novel species belongs to the firmicutes group, gram-positive Bacillus endophytic bacteria. Out of 299 species of the Bacillus groups, only 30 species are novel and the newly innovated Bacillus oryzicola is at the 31st
position.
In the research, out of 250 endophytic bacteria, only two strains-- YC7007 and YC7010-- were of the novel species. Bacillus oryzicola was isolated from the rice root. Type strain YC7010 was kept in Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (KACC) as KACC 18228 and its 16s RNA gene was kept in National
Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) gene data bank as KP203823 and KP201498. Hossain’s research finding was also published in international journal of Plant Pathology Journal. After completing the 16s RNA gene sequencing, bioinformatics analysis, phylogenetic position, DNA-DNA hybridization, fatty acid analysis, physical and chemical tests the new species Bacillus oryzicola was named a novel species, Hossain said.
The concentration (2×107 cfu/ml) of strain YC7007 drenched in rhizosphere soil showed good control efficacy against panicle blight, bacterial blight and bakanae of rice diseases by 65.2pc, 61.2pc and 78pc respectively, added the researcher. The scientist hopes that the newly developed bacterium Bacillus oryzicola would be helpful in controlling the plant diseases in the monocot and dicot plants.
