BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son, BNP vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, are going to be re-elected to their respective posts at the party’s forthcoming national Council on March 19 without any competition.
Two joint-secretary generals of the BNP, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Mohammad Shahjahan, yesterday collected the nomination papers of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman, respectively, from the party's central office at Naya Paltan as their agents.
Rizvi was the first to collect the nomination paper for Khaleda Zia at 11am from returning officer Nazrul Islam Khan, who is also a member of the party’s standing committee. Later, around 3pm, Mohammad Shahjahan collected the nomination paper for Tarique Rahman.
Yesterday was the last day to collect the nomination papers.
Khaleda will be the party's chairperson for the fourth time after she took charge of the BNP in 1984. She had been re-elected in the 1994 and 2009 national councils.
Tarique Rahman joined the party as an ordinary member in 1988. He became active during the 1991 general elections. He was appointed as the party's senior secretary general in 2002. He was elected senior vice-chairman of the BNP in 2009.
He has been living in London since September 11, 2008.
