The government proposes to import an additional 40MW power from India at the rate of Tk 4.5/kWh under a bilateral agreement between Bangladesh and India.
The power would be imported from the Jaypee Nigrie Super Thermal Power Station of Madhya Pradesh in India, owned by PTC Jayprakash Power Venture Limited, sources in the Power Division said.
For importing power through the Veramara-Bohrampur grid in Bangladesh, a proposal has been prepared and will be placed at the next meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Purchase Affairs to be held soon, the sources added.
According to sources, the 40MW power from the coal-based Jaypee Nigrie Super Thermal Power Station would be purchased for a two-year term.
In the proposal, Power Division Secretary Monuwar Islam stated that according to the tender evaluation committee, they accepted the PTC India Limited (PTC Jayprakash Power Venture Limited) as the first-rank responsive bidder with an adjusted quoted tariff of US$5.704 Cents/kWh.
“At present, the government is importing power since October 5, 2013 under the unallocated quota of the Indian Government at a cost of Tk 2.78/kWh,” the proposal added.
At present, 500MW power is imported from India through the Bheramara grid sub-station, which is set to be supplemented by another 100MW power from Tripura in India through the Tripura (India)-Comilla South Substation (Bangladesh) Grid.
In 2009, when the Awami League came to power, the country’s power generation capacity was 4,942MW. Countrywide, electricity generation was 3,268MW at the beginning of 2009 and reached 7,418MW in July last year.
Annually, the increases have been 365MW (in 2009), 775MW (2010), 1,763MW (2011), 951MW (2012), 1163MW (2013) and 583MW (2014). At present, 68 per cent of the total population has access to electricity, including renewable energy, and the per capita generation is 348kWH.
Meanwhile, an Indian company, CMR, has expressed an interest to export 500MW of electricity to Bangladesh from Nepal. Bangladesh will iterate interest to import electricity from Nepal and Bhutan under sub-regional cooperation and seek India’s consent to it.
