The BNP is still trying to obtain the permission to hold its national council at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on March 19, even though the party has already got the green signal for two other venues—Suhrawardy Udyan and Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).
According to sources, a senior BNP leader yesterday spoke to the BICC authorities. The authorities concerned told the BNP leader that they are still considering the matter and would let him know about their decision soon, said the sources. The sources added that the party would like to wait for some more days, as the party high command prefers to hold the council at BICC. It has been learnt that the BNP will finalise the matter within a day or two.
The party has already received a verbal permission to use Suhrawardy Udyan and a written permission from the IEB management. However, it did not receive any response from the police authorities to use any of the two venues, said party insiders.
“We've received permission to use the premises of the Institute of Engineers to hold the council,” said party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Asked whether the party is also expecting permission from the BICC management, Fakhrul said the authorities concerned are taking too long to decide on the issue. “We'll finalise the venue immediately, for we must take preparations for the council,” he added.
Preferring anonymity, a party policymaker said they would have to hold the council at the IEB if they do not get the nod from the BICC. He argued that if the BICC allows the ruling Awami League to use the premises, the BNP should also be allowed to use it. “It'll not be a good gesture from the BICC if we don’t get the nod from them,” he said. The leader also said the publicity for the council is being hampered as the party is yet to get permission for the venue. “We're now giving invitation without mentioning the name of the venue,” he added.
He expressed regret that it would be hard for them to hold the council if they are not given permission to hold the event at the BICC on time. Standing committee member Brig. Gen. (Retd) ASM Hannan Shah said it is regrettable that the government is yet to give full permission, including the police clearance, for any venue. He, however, expressed hope that the government would soon respond positively in this regard.
Meanwhile, BNP joint secretary general Mohammed Shajahan said the preparation for the council is going on in full swing.
