Journalists from different national and local print and electronic media of Khulna city yesterday demanded reinvestigation into all murders of journalists, including the murder of Harunur Rashid Khokon, a senior staff reporter of local Bengali daily ‘Dainik Purbanchal.’
The speakers also demanded immediate arrest of the masterminds who played active role for planning murders of journalists Humaun Kabir Balu, Manik Chandra Shaha, Sheikh Belal Uddin, Harunur Rashid Khokon and Nahor Ali. They alleged that the godfathers were left out of the charge sheets submitted to courts by investigation officers of the cases due to political influence. They further alleged that many involved in murder of journalists got away scot-free as the police failed to identify them.
They raised the demand at a discussion held at the VIP lounge of Khulna Press Club on the 14th death anniversary of slain journalist Harunur Rashid Khokon yesterday. Khulna Press Club (KPC) and Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) separately arranged the programme.
Harunur Rashid Khokon, a senior staff reporter of local daily ‘Dainik Purbanchal’ published from Khulna, was gunned down by unidentified assailants on March 2 in 2002 while he was on his way to office at Mujgunni area under Khalishpur thana in the city.
Former KPC president Sheikh Abu Hasan presided over the function. The meeting was addressed, among others, former club presidents Prof Ali Ahmed, Ahmad Ali Khan and Md Faruk Ahmed, vice presidents M Anisuzzaman, Mozammel Haque Hawlader and SM Sahid Hossain, former KPC general secretary, Kazi Motahar Rahman, Md Shaheb Ali, SM Zahid Hossain, treasurer Md Rashidul Islam, Assistant Secretay Debnath Ranojit Kumar, executive member Sohrab Hossain, journalists leaders Munsi Mahabub Alam Shohag, Md Shah Alam, Quazi Amanullah, Humayun Kabir, Rakib Uddin Pannu, Hedayet Hossain Molla, Shamsuzzaman Shahin, Koushik Dey Bapi, Arun Kumar Mondal Quazi Amanulla, Debobbrata Roy, Kazi Shamim Ahmed, Zahidul Islam, Abul Hasan Himaloy, Rofiul Islam Tutul, abdul Malek, Alamgir Hannan and only son of late Rashid Khokon Md Sagor Iqbal. KPC general secretary Mamun Reza conducted the discussion meeting.
Earlier on the day, journalists placed floral wreaths at the monument built on Khulna Press Club premises in memory of the slain journalists and discussion meeting followed by milad mahfils.
