At least seven people, including three policemen, were injured in a clash between the law enforcers and students of Barisal University (BU) in the police lines road area of Rangpur city yesterday.
Police had to fire six bullets, lobbed 11 tear shells, and charged batons to control the situation. Police and local sources said that Sajib Hossain, worker of a fast food shop on the police lines road, was sacked from his job for stealing a mobile phone two days ago.
Sajib got engaged in an altercation with the workers of the fast food shop yesterday noon and attacked the shop along with a group of students from the temporary campus of BU located on the Barisal Govt Zilla School compound nearby.
On information, police rushed to the spot and tried to disperse the feuding sections. At one stage, BU students allegedly attacked the policemen throwing brickbats at them.
Three cops— Firoz Hossain, Arafat Ahmed and Ranjan— were injured during the attack.
BU students also attacked a cameraperson of private TV channel Bangla Vision and vandalised his camera. After that, police started charging batons, fired six bullets and lobbed 11 tear shells to control the situation. Four students were detained from the spot.
Deputy Commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police Abdur Rauf Khan said additional police force has been deployed in the area. Cases will be filed against those responsible for the incident, he added.
