Bank manager jailed for fund embezzlement

A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced to jail three people including a manager of Rupali Bank to five years and fined them Tk 30,12,466 in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for embezzlement of bank money. The court also acquitted three others as allegations against them were not proved. The court of Mir Ruhul Amin, Special Judge of Chittagong delivered the verdict. The convicted were identified as AKM Lutfur Rahman, manager of Rupali Bank of Khatunganj Branch, Mahbubul Islam, a staff of Muslim and Brothers, a Khatunganj based business firm, and Jakir Hossain, a resident of Lalkhan bazaar. Lutfur and Mahabub are currently absconding while Jakir is behind bars. The three acquitted are Abul Kalam, Abu Kaisar Chowdhury and MA Hashem, officers of Rupali Bank.   “The three were sentenced to jail for five years as allegation was proved against them undoubtedly under Penal Code section 409,” said Advocate Mesbah Uddin, Special Public Prosecutor of ACC. The court sources said that between July 4 and Sept 8 in 1992, Lutfur Rahman withdrew Tk 1,65,15,915 on behalf of Messrs Rasel & Brothers using a fake address of Sona Miah Market, of Khatunganj
