Withdrawal of UP nominations ends today

The process of withdrawal of nomination papers of the first phase of 738 Union Parishad elections will end today. The last date of settling the appeals of aggrieved candidates, whose nominations were cancelled during the scrutiny on February 23 and 24, came to a close yesterday. Now the Returning Officers will distribute the election symbols to candidates on March 3 and the elections will be held on March 22. The 16-party nominated Chairman candidates already know their election symbols. Independent Chairman candidates will be allotted the election symbols on March 3. Besides the Chairman candidates, there are Member (General) and Member (Reserve) candidates in the upcoming UP polls, who will also get the symbols the same day. After getting the election symbols, the candidates will be able to start their poll campaigns.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) yesterday suspended election in 15 UPs out of 672 of the second phase scheduled for March 31 due to legal complications, including delimitation and voter list. Deputy Secretary of EC Md Shamsul Alam yesterday sent a letter in this regard to the District Election Officers concerned to take necessary measures to halt elections in these UPs.
The letter stated that elections to 15 UPs have been suspended for not having a complete voter list as new enclaves have been included there. Now the elections will be held in only 657 UPs in the second phase.
