Theatre Art Unit will stage its much-acclaimed production titled ‘Golapjan’, scripted and directed by SM Solaiman, today at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Segun Bagicha in the city, The play will be brought to the stage as a part of a five-day commemorative event titled ‘Smriti, Swatta, Bhabissat’ to pay tribute to the nine noted deceased playwrights of the country this February—the month of language movement. ‘Golapjan’ is a memoir of the livelihood of old Dhaka city. Golapjan, an ordinary woman of old Dhaka, portrayed carefully the struggles through her childhood, adolescence and youth, and into her old age up to the age of 65 years. ‘Golapjan’ is a portrayal of a working woman of the mid 20th century living in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, her struggles living through the development process of the capitalist society.
In the 1930s, Golapjan was born in a very poor family in Dhaka. She had a golden childhood and adolescence. She was married to a cart-driver while staying in the primary school. The young bride was very fond of Lallu, the horse. Golapjan had a son named Sallu, short for Salauddin. This was the first phase of her story, living with Lallu, Sallu and her beloved husband.
One day, Sallu was seriously injured while taking part in a ‘hakrain’, the kite flying competition. They had to sell their horse to jockey Erphan to pay for medical expenses. But unfortunately because of the lack of money, Sallu did not get the proper medical care he needed, and died. Golapjan was shattered.
Meanwhile Dhaka was changing. The global explosion of technology hit Dhaka in the middle of the 20th century. Rickshaws replaced carts. So Golapjan’s husband becomes a rickshaw-puller. Then one day he lost a leg in an accident. The whole family then depends on Golapjan.
Another side of Golapjan was revealed. Since the state and society had no responsibility to take care of other people, she had to look after her family herself. Golapjan becomes a symbol of the struggle in that Dhaka conservative society. Neglecting the social barriers, Golapjan set up on the street as a snack seller. Golapjan became a part of the labour struggle.
Earlier on the day, a seminar on playwright SM Solaiman will be held at 6:30pm at Studio Theatre Hall, where Professor Syed Jamil Ahmed will read out an essay titled ‘Rangamatam Solaimaner Natyabhubone Avilekhon’ and Mannan Hira and Naila Azad Nupur will be present as discussants.
