Bagerhat: Seven more Awami League-backed chairman candidates are going to be elected unopposed in four upazilas in the first-phase election in 739 Union Councils (UCs) across the country, reports UNB. District election officer M Ruhul Amin Mollick said the nomination papers of three BNP-backed chairman candidates and eight independent aspirants have been cancelled for various reasons, including loan default, while scrutinising their papers. Besides, the nomination papers of nine reserved women member candidates and 44 member contesters have also been cancelled, he said. The election officer, however, said the candidates, whose nomination papers were cancelled, will get the opportunity to file appeal by February 27. The appeal will be heard by March 1. Earlier, 19 AL-backed chairman candidates were the lone candidates in as many union parishads in seven upazilas as the deadline for submission of nomination papers by chairman and member candidates to contest the first-phase election expired on February 22.
