Bachchu Miah, one of the suspects for the killing of four children at Sundrateki village in Bahubal upazila, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Deorgachh village in Chunarughat upazila early yesterday, reports UNB. Kazi Maniruzzaman Monir, commanding officer of RAB-9 Srimangal camp, said tipped off that Bachchu Miah was fleeing to India through Deorgachh border point, a team of the elite force conducted a drive there around 4:30am.
Sensing the presence of the RAB members, Bachchu along with his accomplices started to open fire towards them. The RAB personnel also opened fire to retaliate, leaving Bachchu dead on the spot. They also arrested Bachchu’s accomplice Shahed from the spot.
The RAB team later handed Shahed over to Detective Branch in the morning. Meanwhile, Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Kawsarul Alam placed Shahed, a resident of the Sunderteki village, on a five-day remand in connection with the killin.
The court passed the order when investigative officer of the case produced him before it seeking a 10-day remand.
With this, a total of seven people have so far been arrested in connection with the gruesome murders. Of them, three made confessional statements before court.
The four schoolboys were found buried at the village on February 17 after they went missing from the village on February 12.
Informed by locals, police recovered the bodies of Zakaria Ahmed Shuvo, 8, son of Wahid Miah, his two cousins-Tajel Miah, 10, son of Abdul Aziz, Monir Miah, 7, son of Abdal Miah-and Ismail Hossain, 10, son of Abdul Quadir.
On February 17, police arrested Abdul Ali and his son Jewel Miah in connection with the incident. Police had also arrested Rubel, Arju, Bashir and Saleh Uddin in connection with the incident.
Police said Abdul Ali of Sundrateki village had been at loggerheads with panchayet leader Khaleque Master over establishing supremacy in the locality which led to the murders.
