Bangladesh Twenty20 and ODI skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has been made as the UNDP’s first National Goodwill Ambassador for Youth in Bangladesh by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) yesterday.
Robert G Watkins, UN resident coordinator and UNDP resident representative in Bangladesh, formally announced this at a formal programme at a local city hotel yesterday.
Watkins said that their organisation has involved in this initiative at different 85 more countries across the world. Together with the Bangladesh government, they have been working for the development of the country since 1972.
UNDP resident representative also said that today is the 50th birth anniversary of the UNDP. In such occasion, they appointed Mashrafe Bin Mortaza as the UNDP Goodwill Ambassador for Youth in Bangladesh as a part of their National Ambassador. They chose the right person for the programme and his positive image will inspire a numerous young of the country.
It is learnt that this UN body appointed legend Sachin Tendulkar (India), Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) and Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) as the UNDP’s National Goodwill Ambassador for their respective country.
But they appointed Russian ace Tennis player Maria Shrapova as the UNDP’s Global Goodwill Ambassador.
Mashrafe in his reaction said that his long-cherished dream is going to be fruitful.
“I’d dream to work with young people of the country. I’m very delighted to get the opportunity. I firmly believe that the young generation will lead the country and help its overall development. The young people in this country are very talented. The country will turn into a developed country from developing country by their combined efforts,” said Mashrafe.
