Commerce minister Tofial Ahmed yesterday said the government would strongly discourage the import of sub-standard tea to ensure the growth of local production, reports BSS.
“The government is very much sincere to boost local production instead of tea import. To this end, low-interest loan would be provided alongside discouraging import of low-quality tea,” he said.
The minister passed the remarks while a delegation of Bangladesh Tea Association (BTA), led by its chairman Ardashir Kabir, at his secretariat office.
Recalling the past glory of Bangladesh’s tea, the minister said, at present one lakh labourers are directly engaged with tea garden while nearly ten lakh people are involved with tea industry. “Our soil is very much suitable for tea cultivation. So, we’ve to bring our tea industry ahead.”
The BTA leaders requested the minister to take necessary measures for stopping import of poor quality tea, provide low-interest loan and protect tea garden during establishment of special economic zone.
Replying to them, the commerce minister said: “It’s our responsibility to protect the tea industry and the ministry would do all what is required for it.”
