The Government has taken up a plan to construct a much need bridge over the Teesta River to ease the road communication system between Kurigram and Gaibandha districts including Lalmonirhat, reports BSS.
Office sources said the 1,490-metre long bridge would be constructed over the river between the Horipurghat of Sundarganj upazila Gaibandha district and Chilmari Kheyaghat points of Chilmari upazila under Kurigram district at the direct supervision of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
Executive engineer of LGED M. Maksudul Alam said the building cost of the bridge had been earmarked at TK 653 crore that would be provided by Saudi Fund for Development of KSA and government of Bangladesh.
At present, land acquisition activity for the bridge is going on in full swing; he said adding that after completing the land related activity the construction work of the bridge would begin as early as possible.
Earlier, the feasibility study to construct the bridge over the river was done by the experts’ team of Water and Flood Management Institute of BUET led by Professor Sajib Kumar Bala and Professor Dr. Tariqul Islam in 2010 and 2011, he added.
The people of Gaibandha district are going to Kurigram via Rangpur town and newly constructed Teesta Bridge at Kaunia by moving 127 KM-long road and expensing more times and cost, said an official of LGED.
With the completion of the construction work of the bridge, a much need demand of the locals would be fulfilled as at least 65- km way between Gaibandha and Kurigram would decrease side by side with lessening the transport cost of the people of the districts, he added.
A spacious road from the bridge would also be connected to Rangpur-Bogra Highway at Dhaperhat area under Sadullapur upazila via Laxipur-Sadullapur upazila town to avoid severe traffic jam in Gaibandha district town, he further added.
