Speakers at a human chain in Lalmonirhat yesterday demanded gas supply and overall development of eight northern districts.
Gathered under the banner of Rangpur Bivagh Samity in front of Lalmonirhat judge’s court the speakers said the northern districts must get for industrialisation and balanced development.
North Bengal has always been a neglected area where facilities like education, health and engineering have not developed, they said.
They also urged to reopen Lalmonirhat and Thakurgaon airport, upgrading of Burimari Land Port, modernize the Syedpur airport, develop tourism sector in Panchagarh, and establish EPZ in Nilphamari, agri university in Gaibandha, university in Kurigram and direct railway link from Rangpur to Bangabandhu bridge through Gobindoganj and Bogra cadet college and one more university in Dinajpur district.
Natural gas is a blessing from Allah; but people of northern district cannot enjoy the benefit of the resources, said speakers. If gas can be supplied to the northern districts industrialisation and job opportunities will be created in the area. Famine will go forever from the country, they added.
This hour-long programme was presided over by the samity president advocate Abdullah Al Naser. Among others, prof. Habibur Rahaman, Advocate Anjuman Ara Shapla, vice chairman of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila Shariful Islam and president of Northern Bangladesh Development Council Advocate Ashraf Ali spoke at the programmme.
