“I am going to buy an iPhone” _ that’s a line you probably hear a lot these days. But why?
Why do people want to buy an iPhone? What’s there on an iPhone that you don’t find in any other phone? The cost of an iPhone is probably the same as the price of a kidney (if you are ever compelled to sell or buy one _ don’t!). And then within six months, there is a new model out and people start craving for that particular model.
I have quizzed many people who use iPhones about the mystery that surrounds this device. What’s so special about it? They will say its ‘touch’ is amazing, and then they stop _ as if they have nothing more to say.
But is touch all that matters in this day and age? You will be hard pressed to find a decent phone without a touch screen these days. And they will probably serve the same purpose, and likely, for a faction of the cost.
In Bangladesh, we can’t even buy things from the online Apple Store (eg iTunes), because for that, you need to have an international credit card. Many people may reply that they do have a global card, but why buy this and that app for money when you can get the same things for free on Android, or even Microsoft.
It’s amazing how people buy things with the same specifications for more money. The best thing I saw was a few years ago, when a friend bought an iPhone 4 and then kept brandishing it in everyone’s face. After just three days, the phone stopped working. When he took the phone back to the shop where he bought it, the guy behind the counter blatantly explained that the iPhone came without any warranty. He went from shop to shop trying to get his phone fixed, but alas! The iPhone never woke up from its iSlumber. He had paid Tk 75,000 for that phone.
I did not feel sorry for my friend, but I felt bad for his parents as they had coughed up the money for the phone.
The best part was yet to come. After a few days of mourning, he wanted to get an iPhone 5. That’s where my question lies. Why do people want to buy iPhone? What’s so special about it?
Now, let’s come to the new editions of iPhone: 6 and 6 plus. iPhone 6 plus has a huge screen so that people will be able to see movies and everything else properly. But isn’t this the age of sharing, everything and anything? So, what’s the point of buying a phone which you can’t connect with a pen drive or share stuff via Bluetooth with someone who doesn’t posses one, too? Talk about a blue-blooded phone! To put icing on the cake, the iPhone 6 plus bends if you apply a little bit of pressure to it. Wow! Talk about a delicate Tk 85,000 phone!
With the new release of Apple’s iOS 9 mobile operating system, if there is any problem with the phone and it is fixed by anyone other than an Apple person, than the phone will stop working. Now, how many of us can fly to the US from Bangladesh to fix a phone problem?
Anyway, there will still be people who will argue with my piece. But then again, please think twice, as you know what I have written is nothing but truth.
