Employees seek extention till June

The Banglalink Employees' Union has requested the mobile phone operator to extend the deadline of the Voluntary Separation Scheme offered by the private mobile phone company till June.
On Tuesday, Banglalink, which recently announced voluntary separation scheme for its employees amid staff unrest, said the employees would have to take decision regarding their voluntary separation scheme by Monday (February 29) otherwise the telecom operator would sack them.
“We (Banglalink employees) want extension of the deadline for voluntary separation scheme”, Banglalink Employees' Union president Ujjal Paul told The Independent yesterday adding it is not justified to sack the employees when the company is in profit.
He also said the job markets in telecom sector are now shrinking. The leading telecom operators dismiss employees but do not offer fresh appointment.
“The deadline of voluntary retirement would not be extended farther and the employees who would not submit their resignation letters by this time would not get benefit,”
Banglalink Chief Executive Officer Erik Aas revealed company’s latest stance on employees at a press conference in the capital on Tuesday.
“The timeframe for opting voluntary retirement
will end on February 29 and the employees have to take decision within this time”, Erik added.
He said, “Banglalink is going digital. Better services will be offered to the clients. That’s why digital skills are must for Banglalink. And for that employees need to acquire technological skills.”
The Banglalink CEO, however, said there will be a chance for the employees who are capable of keeping up with the new stance of the company.
The old idea to run a mobile phone company is no longer existence. It is the time to change. We have to achieve the ability to compete with other operators to ensure better services to the clients, Erik further said.
When asked how many employees will lose their jobs, Chief Commercial Officer at Banglalink Shihab Ahmad said the telecom operator is yet to take decision on the number of job cut.
“Bangalink will be a digital organization and the number will be known automatically as it will minimise departmental layers to carry out its digital vision, Shihab added.
Ujjal Paul said according to the law, the employment guidelines of a company has to be approved by the Labour Department but the job guideline of Banglalink is not approved by the Labour Department.
