The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the proposal of the Industries Ministry to formally hand over management of the Chittagong Dry Dock Ltd (CDDL), an enterprise of the Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC), to Bangladesh Navy soon.
The meeting was held at the Bangladesh Secretariat, with Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed in the chair yesterday.
According to the proposal, CDDL will be used to dock the two submarines to be procured for the Navy from China this year.
"The management of the 60-year-old public enterprise would be formally handed over to the Navy after getting approval of the meeting's minutes from the senior authorities," a highly-placed official of the Industries Ministry told this Correspondent after the meeting.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had handed over CDDL to the Bangladesh Navy last December," he said.
"The management of CDDL will be handed over to the Navy with assets worth Tk. 473.74 crore and a debt of Tk. 401.37 crore," the official added.
After receiving the management of the CDDL, the Bangladesh Navy will also build large warship-like patrol craft and corvettes in future.
CDDL is providing quality repair services to ocean-going and coastal vessels, and supporting the water transportation system with international standard technology. CDDL can build at least 20–22 large ocean-going vessels.
Besides ship repairs, the yard also fabricates heavy steel structures, such as portable steel bridges for road communication, foot-overbridges, heavy spares for mills and factories, pressure vessels and mooring and lighting buoys, among other things.
