Classes for 165 students of Darihamidpur Govt Primary School at village Darihamidpur in Jamalpur have been taken in the premises of another school since September, 2014 when its dilapidated building was declared abandoned.
The school authorities, finding no other means, have started taking classes for all the children from 7am to 11am in two shifts at nearby Hanif Uddin High School.
According to sources, the institution, established in 1930 and nationalised in 1973, got a three-room concrete structure in 1994, which was declared abandoned after 20 years of its construction, sources said.
Under the present circumstances the duration of a class has been shortened to only 22 minutes against usual 35 minutes, said Majeda Begum, head teacher of the school.
Assistant teacher Kamrul Ahsan said the teachers are struggling to cover all the required lessons because of the shorter period.
Sources said the number of students has fallen to 165 from 220 over the period. Many students have left for other schools because of the lingering problem, they said.
“I have formally informed the district education officer (DPEO) about the matter and requested him to set up new school building for the institution on an emergency basis,” said head teacher Majeda Begum.
