Mymensingh: Mentioning that impact of climate change on agriculture is a big challenge for Bangladesh, President Abdul Hamid yesterday emphasised the need for expediting research activities with a view to developing salinity tolerant varieties of crops, particularly rice, reports UNB. “It is a huge challenge for Bangladesh to face the negative impact on agriculture due to global climate change. There is a possibility of increase in salinity in coastal areas, fall of productivity, inundation of low-laying area sand major changes might take place in the lifestyle of the people in the region,” he said.
The president said this while addressing the 7th convocation of BAU on its campus.
Abdul Hamid said, “Keeping the matter into consideration, we have to expedite research activities with a view to developing salinity tolerant varieties of crops, particularly rice. We have to keep in mind that the country’s overall development depends on the development of agriculture.”
Observing that there is no alternative to the development of agriculture and farmers to ensure sustainable economic development, President Hamid urged all concerned, including farmers, agriculturists and agriculture-scientists to put joint efforts to expedite the development of the sector to take the country’s gradual development and progress ahead.
The present government has given top priority to agriculture sector in its ‘Vision-2021’ for turning Bangladesh into a middle income country, he said.
A total of 4,908 students received degrees at the convocation while 93 were given gold medals for their outstanding performance.
Our Tangail correspondent adds: President Abdul Hamid said: “We are all liable to the state and its people. The country will go ahead if we all work keeping in mind the responsibility from own perspective.”
He said this as the chief guest at the Platinum Jubilee celebration and re-union of the ex-students of Dhanbari Nowab Institution yesterday afternoon. Terming Tangail district a place of history and heritage he pays homage to the great men who had contributed much during language movement, liberation war and to the development of the country.
The president said students are the future of the country. The welfare of the country and the nation should be the motto of the students. So, the students should be well educated. The golden Bangla as cherished by the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be materialised through the students, he hoped.
Earlier, a colourful rally, led by ex-food minister Abdur Razzaque with elephant, horse-cart, bullock cart, band party, paraded the main streets of Dhanbari municipality town in the morning.
