Mash leadership skill to get a tough test

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s leadership skill is expected to get a tough test in the Asia Cup given he will not get the service of his best batsman Tamim Iqbal while pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman is under threat to be decoded by the batsmen.
Bangladesh kick-start its Asia Cup campaign today with the match against neighbouring country India, a match which also opens the main event of the tournament.
Those two were the pillar of Bangladesh’s success in the last year which saw the team win five bilateral series at home on trot either side of a successful World Cup campaign. While Tamim gave the side a blazing start, Mustafizur’s deadly cutter and slower left the batsmen confounded.
Tamim is out for a family reason as his wife is expected to give birth of their first child. Mustafizur made his way to the team after a shoulder injury which ruled him out for the last two T20s against Zimbabwe in last month.
Mustafizur demolished much-vaunted Indian batting line up on his debut ODI series, creating a huge uproar. He then showed a great consistency, leaving South Africa and Zimbabwe stunned, to be a bowler to watch out in the world cricket.
As his bowling still remains mystery, there is no wonder that the opponents will try to work him out. The Indians after being ransacked by him in the last series will definitely wouldn’t like to face him without any effective plan. That’s what took Mashrafe’s leadership skill to the fore that how he would use Mustafizur and how he would reshuffle batting order in absence of his best and in-form batsman Tamim Iqbal.
What made Mashrafe a highly successful leader was his tendency to use his cricketing brain and read the situation correctly more often than not. His ability to take risks, make the bold move in the field to change the game contributed to Bangladesh’s ODI success.
Moreover there is challenge for Mashrafe to keep his side motivated ahead of the World T20. In a format in which Bangladesh often found them in vulnerable position, it is a challenge for the captain to keep winning run against the giants. A bad result may put a bad impact on World T20 preparation.
To make the matter worse, Mashrafe will get an inform India in the tournament opener but he wasn’t fazed.
“India’s batting order is a challenge for any team in any format. Yes we have that challenge and as I said earlier we have to bowl very confidently and with no fear and have to play with some sort of freedom. We are very confident that we will do our best but on your day anything can happen especially in cricket,” said Mashrafe.
“Last time we played against India it was ODIs, but this time it’s a T20 in the Asia Cup, first time. Its going to be a new experience for everyone not only us. We are very excited to do well in the tournament because we don’t have much preparation before World Cup, we will try our best.”
However Mustafizur’s shrewd cricketing brain seemed to have taken pressure off Mashrafe from giving him some special advice or sweating hard with a field placement for him
“Actually, the best thing is that maybe we have to place the field, but the best thing is that Mustafizur doesn’t care about what others are thinking about him,” said Mashrafe adding, “I am used to deal with the field placement for his bowling, so it’s not a tougher issue for me.”
“He is not one to take pressure, this is his thing that by born for him. For T20 cricket its difficult just for Mustafizur to do well and for us to win, everyone has to do well. We have to play a supporting role for him by minimising our mistakes, it will help the team as well.”
Mashrafe admitted they would miss the service of Tamim, specially when he was inform but ruled out any experiment.
“There is no scope for experiment. We will miss Tamim a lot. It’s not that he is in form, but he was always our best performer. We will miss him definitely, but at the same time those who are there the young players, they will be able to take the pressure. I don’t think it will be much of a problem.”
Mashrafe claimed his team is well prepared and that his side is raring to go.
“To be honest, we have been struggling in this format but we are well prepared. If you look at our rankings it’s not that good but we have to step up from here.”
