Students of ASA University Bangladesh, a private university, blocked Mirpur Road in front of their university in the capital for about one and a half hours yesterday morning protesting the death of a student in a road accident on Monday, reports UNB.
Ashraful Islam Tapu, 24, a 2nd year student of the university’s Business Studies Faculty, was killed as a police requisitioned minibus hit his motorcycle in the capital’s Banani area around 3:45 on Monday. Protesting the incident, some students of the university put on a barricade in front of their university at Shyamoli around 12:30 pm, halting the vehicular movement from College Gate to Shyamoli Cinema Hall areas.
Later, around 2pm the students withdrew their barricade after some university teachers assured them of taking proper steps in the connection.
The organisers told reporters they have withdrawn the road blockade till Friday to observe what steps are taken against the police officials involved in the accident.
The bus that hit Tapu was running on the wrong side, and also violate the signal at the crossing, they alleged.
Though requisitioned, there were police officials inside the bus and proper actions must be taken against them, they demanded and threatened to go for tougher actions on Saturday if the demand is not met.
Police said the minibus collided with the motorcycle of Tapu near Banani Graveyard around 3:45pm, leaving Tapu and his co-rider injured.
Police took them to Kurmitola General Hospital where doctors declared Tapu dead. Police seized the minibus and arrested its driver.
