Quite often law-enforcement agencies resort to wrong-way driving in the name of ‘emergency situations’. Last Monday their wrong-way drive had snatched away the life of a private university student and injured his companion. In the face of extreme exigency the law enforcers, fire brigade and ambulance may opt for alternate routes, but that choice must not lead to unwarranted deaths.
Reportedly the bus carrying police personnel had hit the victim’s motorbike while speeding from the opposite direction. The question apparently is: shouldn’t the driver along with the passengers have travelled with extra-caution for speeding up the vehicle while driving on the wrong side? Was any preventive measure taken to avoid accident for wrong way driving?
According to eye witnesses, the victim could have been saved had the police minibus stopped and picked up him, but instead it sped away after running over the bike. If true, then it’s a sheer callousness from the driver. Students of nearby private universities blocked the road for about two hours after the accident and the driver was detained too. However, detaining the driver will not bring end to accidents and more is needed for reducing the number of such type accidents. The police personnel of the vehicle should have directly controlled the minibus’s speed by monitoring the driver’s movement and speed acceleration since they were commuting from the wrong side too.
On a divided highway, especially freeway, wrong-way driving is a serious problem because of speeding vehicles, often resulting in head-on collisions. Nevertheless, this important fact should have been considered before deciding to take on the wrong side. Under extreme emergency drivers should quickly co-ordinate with traffic personnel of both sides in order to block the flow of running vehicles and control vehicle movement, in order to avoid road accidents. This rarely happens, and also in some cases our law enforcement agencies are reported to instruct drivers for wrong way driving to save time and avoid delay – with or without emergency.
We believe that taking lessons from this mishap the police drivers will refrain from such reckless driving. A proper enquiry should disclose how the accident actually happened and the responsible driver along with others be handed exemplary punishment for Monday’s accident. Moreover, the true reason for opting to drive on the wrong way should be quickly investigated with due diligence.
Being the main instrument of our law enforcement echelon, the police cannot escape its responsibility.
