The BNP yesterday stressed the need for launching a fresh movement to ‘restore’ democracy. “We have to launch a fresh movement to restore democracy and democratic rights that we lost. We will safeguard our independence, sovereignty and culture through the movement,” said BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He was addressing a meeting at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium to mark Shaheed Dibas and International Mother Langue Day.
The BNP leader said the country’s people are living in a suffocative atmosphere and their voices are being suppressed. “We are not allowed to speak and hold rallies; we are not given any venue for holding our party council,” he said and called upon all to go forward following the ideals of late President Ziaur Rahman to overcome the situation. In another programme in the capital, BNP Standing Committee member Brig Gen (Retd) ASM Hannan Shah alleged that the top brass of ruling Awami League is busy with their own development and counting money from the commission in the name of development work. Addressing a discussion meeting, he cited the doubled costs of Gazipur-Mymensingh four-lane highway and four-fold rise in the Dhaka Chittagong four-lane highway project. Dhanershish, a pro-BNP platform, organised the meeting at Jatiya Press Club, protesting filing of sedition cases against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and party’s Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman.
