Thirteen policemen, including Tangail acting police super and its additional police super, have been blamed for the ‘police firing’ on some demonstrators in Kalihati upazila of the district that left four people dead in September last year, reports UNB. Two probe reports submitted by police to the High Court yesterday also recommended taking legal actions against the responsible policemen. Accepting the reports, an HC bench comprising Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Justice M Iqbal Kabir asked the police to inform it what actions were taken against the 13 policemen. The court asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of Dhaka range to submit a report by March 7 in this connection.
The court also fixed March 9 for the next hearing.
On September 18 last year, four people were killed and 50 others injured, four with bullets, as police allegedly opened fire and charged baton on some people demonstrating against torture on a youth and his mother in Kalihati upazila in Tangail.
The incident took place when police obstructed the procession brought out by a group of people of Kalihati and Ghatail upazilas during their march towards Kalihati Police Station to lay a siege to the police station demanding an exemplary punishment of the culprits who had stripped naked the youth in front of his mother and took photo of the incident at Satutia village in the upazila.
