Afghanistan came up with ruthless performance to maul Hong Kong by 66 runs in its last match of the Asia Cup qualifier yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. By the big margin victory they also made sure that the net run rate would be higher than UAE who stunned them in the first match.
Till filing of this report, UAE was playing with Oman and the result in this match would determine who will join the four Test nations in the main competition of the regional tournament.
In a bid to make the net run rate healthy, Afghanistan came hard on Hong Kong and amassed a huge 178 for seven. Hong Kong got off to a fluent start but lost nine wickets for just 33 runs to be bowled out for 112 in 17.1 overs.
Najibullah Zadran struck a fluent 35 ball-60 not out to help Afghanistan reach a position of dominance. He was aided by Asghar Stanikjai’s 49 off 35 as they combined for 51 runs for the fourth wicket to set a good platform. Zadran clattered three fours and four sixes in his innings while Stanikzair hammered four fours and three sixes. Opener Mohammad Shahzad was the other notable scorer with 24.
Thanks to opener Anshuman Rath and KD Shah, Hong Kong gave a fitting reply what should be in the case of chasing a big total. They added 56 runs for the opening stand in just six overs. Mohammad Nabi gave the side a breakthrough having dismissed Shah for 29 but still there was ray of hope for Hong Kong who was driven by Rath and Babar Hayat. Once Hayat was out for 18, Hong Kong started losing wickets in cluster.
After a brief resistance, Rath was finally removed for 41 and the last hope of Hong Kong was shattered. Nabi wrecked the havoc, claiming four for just 17.
