The state-owned Barapukaria Coal Mine Company Ltd (BCMCL) will place the development project proposal (DPP) for Dighipara coalfield, so as to extract coal from it, at its next board meeting, said sources at the BCMCL.
Petrobangla, the state-owned energy company, and the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) have already handed over the exploration licence for 4,000 hectares of the Dighipara coalmine area to BCMCL. The latter is developing the country’s lone coalmine, which has reserves of 390 million tonnes stretching over 6.68 square kilometres in Parbatipur upazila.
A BCMCL official told The Independent that the pro forma of the DPP has already been prepared and a consultancy firm would be hired after the DPP was approved by the board. The project tenure for the feasibility study is three years—from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2019.
The BCMCL official added that the project’s main objectives would be to identify the total reserves of Dighipara coal basin (within 24 sq. km) and to develop a coalmine with a production capacity of 3 million tonnes per year in the central part of the basin (within 6 sq. km).
In November last year, the Energy Division had asked BCMCL to draft a report in this connection. The government has a plan to set up a series of coal-run power projects to generate 20,000 MW of electricity by 2030. But no arrangement has so far been made to import coal to meet the goal.
