Media Adviser to the Prime Minister and The Daily Observer editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury yesterday urged the journalists to present ‘objective and factual’ news to accelerate the country’s democratic progress and protect rights.
Terming newspapers the ‘fourth pillar’ of democracy, Iqbal Sobhan said, “In a democratic country, media can play a key role to uphold democracy and protect human rights. So, the journalists should more concentrate on presenting objective and credible news. Iqbal hoped that if the journalists avoid publishing partial news, Bangladesh would make a real progress in all sectors. “You (journalists) should cross check the information gathered for (your) news before its release”, said the Adviser. Iqbal Chowdhury further said truthfulness, honesty, loyalty to citizen and courage to gather news should be the principles of journalism. Every journalist must have a personal sense of ethics and responsibility, he said, adding that a journalist must be accountable to himself. He made the remarks while addressing as chief guest at annual general meeting (AGM) of Khulna Press Club (KPC) at VIP lounge of KPC under Sadar police station in the city.
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda, Lawmaker of Khulna Sadar constituency Mizanur Rahman Mizan, Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Md Nazmul Ahsan, Mayor (acting) of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Anisur Rahman Biswas were present as special guests. KPC convener, also Khulna bureau chief of Bengali daily ‘Dainik Jugantor’ Sheikh Abu Hasan presided over the function. The meeting was addressed, among others, journalists’ leader Mokbul Hossain Mintu, Monirul Huda, Wadudur Rahman Panna, SM Zahid Hossain, SM Habib, Md Zakir Hossain, Mamun Reza, Amal Krisna Saha, Mostafa Jamal Poplu, Mollik Sudhansu, Arun Saha, Kamrul Ahsan, Subir Kumar Roy, Md Faruk Ahmed, Rokib Uddin Pannu, Hasan Ahmed Mollah, Hedayet Hossain, HM Alauddin. Member secretary of KPC Mahbub Alam Shohag conducted the meeting.
