Around 63 per cent of people in the country die every year due to non-communicable diseases across the country, experts said yesterday. This rate was projected to reach 70 per cent by the next 10 years, they added.
The fatalities pertained to diseases of the heart, lungs, kidney along with cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes.
More than 50 per cent of these diseases could be prevented if people became aware and changed their lifestyle from an early age, they observed.
They also said treatment facilities in the country were insufficient in comparison to the demand. In particular, the poor people in the remote parts of the country were the worst sufferers.
The experts were speaking at a meeting 'Change lifestyle for getting sound health and longevity,' following a daylong free medical camp at Hatibandha village in Tangail district. The camp and meeting was hosted by Kidney Awareness Monitoring and Prevention Society (KAMPS), a voluntary healthcare organisation.
In his keynote presentation, the KAMPS chairman and chief consultant of the kidney department of Lab Aid Specialised Hospital, Prof. Dr MA Samad, said about 20 million people were suffering from some form of kidney disease. Of them, 14–18 per cent suffered from chronic kidney disease (CKD) in both rural and urban areas, while 35,000 to 40,000 people die of ESRD (End Stage of Renal Disease) every year and 20,000 to 25,000 people suffered from acute kidney failure every year.
The KAMPS has adopted a very innovative way to honour language martyrs by holding a free medical camp and health education fair to treat poor patients and spread awareness in the village.
Prof. Samad said KAMPS was set up to serve poor patients and raise awareness against kidney diseases. The organisation has treated more than 50,000 people so far and carried out more that 1,000 cataract surgeries totally free of cost.
The KAMPS organised the event to mark unveiling of its annual publication on the occasion of Free Medical Camp and Health Education Fair named 'Prayash-12'.
As part of the day long camp, a well-organised team of nearly 40 expert physicians and technologists treated poor patients at the camp.
