Joss Stone delights Dhaka audience

Grammy and Brit Award-winning English soul sensation singer and multi-instrumentalist Joss Stone thrilled the Dhaka audience with her enchanting voice and gave absolutely a breathtaking performance   at the Pop Republic Concert, held on Saturday at Nabaratri Hall 4, International Convention City, Bashundhara in the capital. As part of her Total World Tour, LiveSquare Entertainment arranged the programme.
The place was filled as eager and enthusiastic fans gathered in eager anticipation to watch the superstar perform. The evening began around 6:30 with popular singer Minar, who opened the show to the delight of the audience. Armeen Musa then came on to the stage and mesmerised the crowd with her captivating voice. This was followed by performances from popular singers Elita Karim, then Rafa . Jon Kabir came on the stage and thrilled the crowd with his performance.
Finally, the much-anticipated moment came when Joss Stone appeared on the stage to a massive ovation from the delighted crowd. She sang some of her notable hits and the crowd sang along with her as well. Popular hits such as ‘Fell In Love With A Boy’, ‘Super Duper Love’, ‘Stuck On You’, ‘I Put A Spell On You’, among others were performed. In between the songs, she even gave a brief history behind the songs. Overall, the Dhaka crowd was thrilled with her presence and her brilliant performance.
Prior to the concert, a press conference was held with Joss Stone on Friday, where the award winning artiste answered various questions from the media.
She explained that coming to Bangladesh was part of her world tour. She said, “We want to experience the place we are in. We want to give as much music and goodness as we can. We experience  the gig, visit people for a charitable effort. We are spending three days in each place. It is fun and we enjoy it. I hope everyone enjoys it and they come to the gig.”
There are many aspiring young artistes who want to pursue their passion for music. What advice would the award winning star give to them? To that, Stone replied, “The advice I would give is to figure out why you begin. It is a long path which can be difficult. There might be ups and downs and issues  might come your way. You might change your musical preference, you might want to sing in a different way. But if you figure out why you began, then your focus remains the same. I would always say remember why you began. In that way you might end up happier.”
One complain from a lot of artistes that are starting out is that they often do not get that opportunity to showcase their talent and their potential. So what would be a proper platform to begin and slowly make it to the big leagues. Joss Stone replied, “It’s about what you want. Success is different for everybody. I would say that keep on making music as often as possible. Word of mouth is a very powerful thing.  If you are good, that is what it really comes down to. If you move people regularly, people talk about that. If they love it, they will want it and say that they want to listen to it again and again, then the person will keep on getting recognition, they will keep on getting gigs. If you are not, you have to look at your craft, hone it, make it better, make it soulful. You must listen back to yourself and ask questions such as was it out of tune. What can be done to make it better? Just hone it. I think word of mouth is the best platform.”
Nowadays it can often be seen that western music often incorporates elements from music from the subcontinent. To this, Joss Stone replied, “We are lucky that we now live in a world where we are so connected with all parts of the world. For example, in New York, you can walk into a shop and find a sari. Then from there you can use the material and make a dress that looks nothing like one. To be able to mix sounds, colours and different cultures I feel is one of the most exciting parts of life. The last record that I made called ‘Water For Your Soul’ is my first attempt at doing exactly that. I am taking lots of different sounds from everywhere and mixing them together. We have table, Irish fiddles, American gospel choirs, reggae, a little bit of flamenco, and lots of more stuff. It is a lot of fun, rather than singing the same types of songs over and over again. It keeps it interesting.”
