Party nominations for UP polls

Hectic lobbying for BNP tickets

RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD

BNP leaders aspiring for important posts in the party are lobbying with the top hierarchy, including senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman in London.
Many of them are interested in either getting a place in the standing committee or a post as joint secretary general. Some of them are also lobbying for the post of secretary general, according to party sources.
“Businesspersons and industrialists have become desperate to get an important place in the party, and are now lobbying with policymakers,” said a senior party leader.
The aspiring leaders are, however, not getting any hope from the party high command, as two teams, comprising  bureaucrats and former army officers, are working towards reorganising the party as per directives from the top, said the leader. They are working on the basis of two lists of tested leaders provided by the party high command.
Some leaders are also visiting London to lobby with the future torchbearer, Tarique Rahman, as they feel that lobbying with senior party leaders has not been fruitful, the leader added.
The aspiring leaders are thronging both the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office and the party headquarters at Naya Paltan.
BNP standing committee member, Lt Gen. (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman, termed such activities as "a legacy" ahead of party reorganisation. He, however, said that it is tough to land a good post in the party only by lobbying. “The new leadership should be efficient and skilled, and accepted within the party,” he said.
Vice-chairman Maj (Retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed also said that only lobbying does not get anyone a good post in the party.
“The chairperson (Khaleda Zia) knows everyone. She decides who will be given important posts in the party,” he added.
The BNP chairperson’s advisor, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, said they all expect the party high command to pick honest, devoted, dedicated and tested leaders in important posts.
The BNP is planning to hold its national council on March 19 and reor ganise the party by infusing fresh blood in the leadership. The party has already forwarded the names of three venues to hold the national council, but is yet to get permission from the authorities. The last BNP council was held on December 8, 2009.

According to the party charter, the national council is supposed to be held every three years.
Earlier, the BNP had tried to hold its national council several times, but failed because of the political turmoil in the country.
