Two crude bombs were exploded at Central Shaheed Minar in Jessore on early yesterday when people from all walks of life were paying tributes to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement, reports UNB.
Witnesses said some miscreants hurled the two crude bombs targeting the altar of the Shaheed Minar around 12:09 am, triggering panic among people who had assembled there to pay homage to the language martyrs.
Shafin Mahmud, assistant superintendent of Jessore Police, said the explosions took place just after local lawmaker Kazi Nabil Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of Jessore Humayun Kabir and Police Superintendent Anisur Rahman left the Central Shaheed Minar premises after placing wreaths at zero hour.
Policemen on duty in the area fired 15 rounds of bullets to bring the situation under control, the police official said.
However, ten people were slightly injured in stampede during the blasts. The injured were given first aid, said police.
When contacted over the incident, Illlias Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said the identity of the attackers who exploded the bombs could not be known.
