Young expats should be multilingual global citizens

UNB

Bangladesh Ambassador to Thailand Saida Muna Tasneem has said the young expatriates should prepare themselves as multilingual and multicultural global citizens upholding the values of 1952 and 1971, reports UNB.
She made the call while addressing a function marking the International Mother Language Day at the Bangladesh Embassy in Bangkok yesterday.
Ambassador Tasneem also called upon all expatriate Bangladeshis to spontaneously support Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s campaign for recognising Bangla as one of the official languages of the UN, according to a message received here from Bangkok.
The event was jointly arranged by the Bangladesh Embassy and Unesco Regional Office in collaboration with the UNESCAP.
Tasneem paid tributes to the language martyrs and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his fearless leadership of the 1952 language movement even from the shackles of repeated imprisonments culminating into the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.
Bangladesh Ambassador also reaffirmed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government remain deeply committed towards strengthening the
UNESCO-accredited International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka for research, preservation and development of more than 6,000 mother tongues of the world.
The Embassy and the United Nations Offices organised a colourful multilingual cultural programme participated by a large number of expatriate Bangladeshi children, representatives of Unesco, UNESCAP and senior diplomats from neighbouring South Asian countries.
Diplomats from South Asian countries and various representatives of UNESCAP spoke in their mother tongues and commended Bangladesh for creating a platform for cultural interactions based on love for language, friendship and peace.
Singing the legendary Amar Ekushey lyrics ‘Amar Bhai er Rokhte Rangano’, a procession of expatriates and their children, led by Ambassador Saida Muna Tasneem, laid wreaths and flower bouquet on the steps of a ‘Shaheed Minar’ replica built at the Embassy.
