Two killed by nephews over land dispute

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Manikganj

Two middle-aged men were murdered, allegedly by their nephews and the latter’s henchmen, in Manikganj district yesterday morning. The motive was apparently to settle an old dispute over property and borrowed money.
The victims—Aziz Molla, 50, and his brother Tendul Molla, 45—lived in Gobindol village under Putail union in Singair upazila of Manikganj. Their cousin, Karim Molla, 50, was critically injured in the attack. He is currently on life support in Savar Enam Medical College Hospital.
Md Saiduzzaman, OC of Singair police station, alleged that three brothers, Jahid, Rashid, Josim, and their accomplices attacked Karim and Tendul around 8 am. They allegedly hacked his uncles repeatedly, killing them on the spot.
The gang also allegedly injured around 10 local people who tried to save the trio. Of them, seven were admitted to different hospitals in a critical condition.
Quoting the victims’ family members and villagers, police sources said that Tendul’s sister Hasina Begum had died in Bahrain five months ago. Her sister Rizia’s son Rashid also worked in Bahrain. Rashid and his brothers Jahid and Josim allegedly appropriated Hasina’s cash and properties. Hasina was childless.
This created a rift between Tendul and his nephews. Locals had apparently tried to solve the dispute, but eventually failed. Tendul finally filed a complaint at Singair police station against the trio. The nephews then apparently offered him Tk.3.5 lakh, but later backtracked. They had allegedly attacked Tendul with a hammer on Friday, too.
The trio and their henchmen allegedly got into the house yesterday offering to solve the dispute. But after a heated argument, they allegedly attacked Tendul, his brother Abdul Karim and their cousin Aziz Molla with sharp weapons. Tendul and Aziz died on the spot, while Abdul Karim was seriously injured.
Jakir Hasan, additional SP of Manikganj, said the nephews and uncles had long been at loggerheads over property dispute and borrowed money.
“We can find out the actual motive behind the killings only after investigation. We are trying to arrest the accused,” he added. The bodies were sent to Manikganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
