Public, private universities observe International Mother Language Day
Different public and private universities yesterday observed the Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day, paying rich tributes to the Language Movement martyrs, who laid down their lives for the mother tongue Bangla on February 21, 1952.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University (BSMRMU) organized poetry recitation, essay competition and various other programmes in observance of the day on its temporary campus at Pallabi in the capital. BSMRMU acting vice-chancellor Commodore ANM Rezaul Huq was the chief guest and officers, faculty members, students and staffs of the university attended the programmes.
Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) brought mourning procession, led by the vice-chancellor Md Ali Akbar from the university club to the central Shaheed Minar on the campus. A cultural programme was also held on the Shaheed Minar premises where students of different organisations took part. Special prayer was also offered at the central mosque and different mosques of the resident halls for the departed souls of the heroes.
North South University (NSU) organised a discussion on the International Mother Language Day and a cultural programme. A book titled Ekush Mane Gonotantrik Chetona covers was unveiled in the programme.
Earlier, Chairman of Board of Trustees, vice chancellor in charge, faculty members and administrative heads, staffs and representatives of 20 student clubs placed floral wreath at the Shaheed Minar at NSU to pay homage to language martyrs.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) teachers, students, employees brought out mourning procession, offered floral wreath to martyrs at the university Shaheed Minar and Bangabandhus Mural. They also held discussion, special prayer session at the university central mosque after Zohr prayer.
