It resembled a reunion of the Spanish community in Dhaka, as a 10-day solo exhibition of Spanish artist Esperanza Romero titled ‘Unknown Spirit’ was inaugurated at Gallery Cosmos-2 in the capital’s Mohakhali DOHS area on Saturday, reports UNB.
Nazim Farhan Choudhury, managing director of ADCOMM, Amparo Porta, head of Inditex Chair of Spanish language and culture at the University of Dhaka, and eminent artist Shahid Kabir jointly inaugurated the exhibition organised by art patron Nevine Sultana and hosted by Gallery Cosmos.
Tehmina Enayet, director of Gallery Cosmos, said all the works in the exhibition show the Romero’s creativity, and commended her ‘great spirit and heart’.
Shahid Kabir said the works are very poetic, and show much feeling. He also commented that the artist works very methodically.
Painters Kalidas Kormokar and Monirul Islam were also present and gave short speeches about the exhibition.
Many expatriates from Spain living in Bangladesh were present at the inauguration.
Some of Romero’s works in the exhibition are the Unknown Spirit series, Chasing printed on mixed media on canvas, Migration 2, Mirando la tarde, Bandada de Pajaro, Narcissus and Icarus.
Esperanza Romero studied in London obtaining a BA honors from the Camberwell School of Art (1976-1981), and a further Master’s Degree at the Royal College of Art (1982-1985). Since then she started an international career with exhibitions in France, Holland, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, China, Italy, India and Japan. Later, she left England and went to live in Granada, Spain. From there she continues developing her work in the fields of etching, painting and sculpting.
