826 crime incidents reported in port city last month

As many as 826 incidents of crime were reported in Chittagong city and rest of the district January last.
This was revealed at a meeting of the District Law and Order Committee at the Chittagong district administration’s conference hall in the port city recently.
Of the total number of crimes, 425 were reported by the 16 police stations in the city and the rest 401 took place in the 16 upazilas.
According to the report, the city witnessed 202 cases of narcotics recovery, 16 incidents of repression of women and children, and five rapes in January. This was slightly better than the scenario in December 2015, which had seen a total of 436 crimes, including six rapes and 26 cases of repression of women and children.
The situation, however, was quite the opposite in the rest of the district. Compared to 390 incidents in December 2015, the number rose to 401 in January. Of these, 192 cases were related to narcotics recovery in the upazilas.
Moreover, the district police arrested 552 accused last month as against 593 in December 2015.
In the city, police arrested 515 accused in January. Most of the narcotics-related arrests pertained to yaba rackets. Law enforcers recovered 4,013,500 pieces of the contraband tablets from different areas of the port city in January.
The meeting on crime statistics was chaired by the deputy commissioner of Chittagong district administration, Mesbah Uddin. It was attended by SP (Chittagong district) AKM Hafiz Akhter, Chittagong Press Club president Kalim Sarwar, upazila chairpersons, municipality mayors, upazila nirbahi officers, and representatives of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
