The UAE pushed them closer to a spot in the main competition after they sealed a six-wicket victory over Hong Kong in its second match of the Asia Cup qualifier at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium yesterday.
Mohammad Shahzad scripted the effortless victory by smashing 39 ball-52 which guided UAE overhaul Hong Kong’s 146 for seven with nine balls to spare.
This was Hong Kong’s second successive loss that shattered their hopes to qualify completely.
UAE who stunned Afghanistan in the first match, will take on Oman in its last match today while Afghanistan face off Hong Kong. Both Afghanistan and Oman have one win in two matches.
Hong Kong rode on Babar Hayat’s heroic once again. Following his record breaking 60 ball-122 in the first match against Oman, Hayat struck 45 ball-54 in this match to give the scoreboard a shape.
After opting to bat first, Hong Kong made a disastrous start by losing two wickets with the scoreboard reading just 26. Hayat, aided by Mark Chapman steadied the ship with a 62-run partnership for the third wicket. Chapman contributed a fluent 29 off 17 which included three fours and a six.
Hayat however lost his concentration once Champan got out. He was the fourth batsman to be out, leaving the side in 122. Hayat hit eight fours in his innings.
However Nizakat Khan then took the charge to take the side closer to 150. Khan clobbered two sixes and a four in his 18 ball-28 while the other batsmen failed to chip-in-with any reasonable score.
Mohammad Naveed was the highest wicket taker for UAE with three for just 14. UAE also made a troublesome start in a bid to keep up their winning run. They were left 22 for two after which Mohammad Shahzad and Muhammad Usman set the tune. They combined for a 79-run for the third wicket to make the match a one-way traffic.
Usman made 41 off 39, sending the ball across the ropes six times but Shahzad went on to complete his half-century. Shahzad blasted 52 off 39 with four fours and one six but got dismissed when the team was juts six runs away of the victory.
Shaiman Anwar who was accompanying Shahzad after the dismissal of Usman completed the victory and remained not out on 25. He played just 18 balls in which he struck two fours and one six.
